Mary Petrie was born about 1831 in Arboath, Angus, Scotland.

She married David Baird, a shoemaker, on 30 December 1853 in Arbroath and they had eight children, three who died in infancy.

In 1883 the family emigrated to Otago on the Nelson and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Outram, West Taieri.

David died in 1906 and Mary died at her daughter’s home in Dunedin on 25 February 1909, they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
