Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Greening was born in 1843 in London – the daughter of Thomas Greening, a greengrocer, and Maria Cox.

She emigrated to Otago in 1874 on the Corona accompanied by her sister Maria and she married William Berryman the following year.

They had four children, one who died in infancy and Mary also helped to raise their daughter’s son who was born in 1899.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Ferguslie, North East Valley.

William died at their home in 1897 and Mary died at her son’s home in South Dunedin on 22 December 1920 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
