Mary Ann Bowler was born in England in 1854. She travelled to New Zealand with her husband George Bowler (1832–1906) onboard the ship Carnatic which docked in Dunedin in February 1874. George was 20 years older than Mary and had three sons from a previous marriage who all travelled with them to New Zealand.

Mary, then aged 20, gave birth to her first child, Elizabeth Ann Carnatic Bowler (1873–1914), onboard the ship on 14 December 1873.

The family settled in Arrow Junction near Arrowtown where they had a further 12 children, all of whom survived to adulthood.

Mary died at the age of 46 after a bout of influenza. Her youngest child was aged seven.
