Mary Pollock Abbey was born in Scotland about 1836, she emigrated to Otago and married George Deans, a stonemason, on 30 January 1867 at Knox Church, Dunedin.
They had four children, one who died in infancy.
The family lived in Great King St, Dunedin and when Mary signed the suffrage petition her occupation was washerwoman.
George died in 1908 and Mary died on 29 May 1921, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
