Mary Grundy was born in 1854 in Limber, Lincolnshire, England England – the daughter of Joseph Grundy, a foreman, and Hannah Brinkell.
She emigrated to New Zealand in the 1870s and married William Dodds on 17 September 1874.
William worked at a barman at the White Horse Hotel in Milton, South Otago.
They had four children and, in 1888, the family moved to Dunedin and William worked as a carter - when Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Cumberland St.
William died in 1910 and Mary died on 9 July 1930, she is buried with William in the Northern Cemetery.
