Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Knight was born on 1 July 1865 in Moonta, a mining area in South Australia, - the daughter of John Knight, a miner, and Elizabeth Ann Bawden. (See 251 E A Knight)

Her family sailed for New Zealand in 1875 and after a time in Lyttleton they settled on the West Coast.

Mary married William Grigg, a coal merchant, in 1884 and they had nine children.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Black’s Point near Reefton.

Due to William’s failing health they moved to Nelson where he died in 1907.

Mary died on 27 March 1947 – they are buried together in the Wakapuaka Cemetery.
