Biographical information provided by Briar Barry for the He Tohu exhibition:

Mary Ann Carroll was born in Lyttleton, Canterbury. She married Charles Horniblow on 17 March 1875 at the Holy Trinity Church, near where she grew up. Charles was born about 1852 in England and came to New Zealand with his parents James and Lucy Horniblow. When the family was about to set sail a case of small pox was discovered on board the Mystery and they were landed at Gravesend. The two elder children (Elizabeth and Edwin) proceeded by the original ship but the parents and other siblings (Emily, William Henry, Charles and Mary Ann) sailed on the next ship, the Victory arriving in Lyttelton on 14th May 1859.
