Biography submitted by Fiona Simpson, (great-grandniece) And Sherree Simpson, (great great-grandniece)

Mary Jane Dunstan (also known as Minnie) was born on 26 August 1869 in Mornington, Dunedin.

She married John Anderson on 18 February 1891, at her parents’ home in Charlton, Gore.

The following is from the recorded memories of Ila Vivian – Minnie’s niece in about 1997.

“Our Aunty Minnie was a loving wife and mother, and very devoted to her home and family. Hospitality was the keynote of her lovable nature, and she made many lifelong friends. She was an enthusiastic member of the Gore District Highland Society and she was elected as a Life Member of the Society. Was also an early member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union, when it was but in its infancy in Gore. She also took a keen interest in the Welfare of the Gore Early Settlers Association.”

Minnie aged 24 along with her mother, Harriet Dunstan signed the suffrage petition in Charlton. (see 127 Harriet Dunstan)

She died on the 4 February 1944 in Dunedin.
