Mary/Polly Carroll was born about 1855 in County Cork, Ireland.
She emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the James Nicol Fleming – also on board was Daniel Joyce.
She married Daniel in 1876 and they had six children.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Whitstone in North Otago and Daniel was working as a road surfaceman for the Waitaki County Council.
Mary died at Whitstone on 16 August 1923 and Daniel died in 1933 – they are buried with their family in the Old Oamaru Cemetery.
