Mary was born about 1840 in Galway, Ireland.

She emigrated to Wellington in 1874 on the Soukar accompanied by her husband William, a labourer, and four children.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Braemar St, South Dunedin.

Mary died at her home on 4 June 1906 and William died in 1908, they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
