Mary Gibson was born about 1827 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, she married John Shackleton, a cabinet maker and widower, on 26 June 1857 in Greenock, Renfrewshire.
They had four children, two of who survived childhood and lived in Dunbartonshire until they emigrated to Otago about 1890.
They settled in Caversham, Dunedin where Mary signed the suffrage petition.
John died in the Benevolent Institution in 1896 & Mary died on 10 December1902. They are both buried in the Southern Cemetery.
