Mary Ferrie was born on 25 March 1866 in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland – the daughter of William Ferrie and Margaret McBride.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1875 on the Auckland and they settled in Dunedin.

Mary married James Williams on 4 January 1888 in Dunedin.

Their first child was born in Victoria, Australia in 1890 after which they came back to Dunedin where they had, at least, a further four children.

James died in 1939 and Mary died at her home on 25 October 1945 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
