Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Mathina Stewart Samson was born on 20 July 1867 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of John Samson, a baker, and Elizabeth Brown. (See 66 Mrs E Samson)
She emigrated to New Zealand with her family about 1874 and they settled in Dunedin.
Mathina married Daniel Law Carlin, an engine driver, in 1886 and they had three children.
When Mathina signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Castle St, Dunedin.
In 1896 the family moved to Waipori where Daniel worked on a dredge at goldfields. His foot was badly crushed in 1899 and had to be amputated - a benefit concert was held raising more than £25.
The family later moved back to Dunedin where Mathina died at her daughter’s home on 4 February 1931.
Daniel died in 1940, they are buried in the Samson family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
