Mary Ann Burns was born about 1856 Australia – the daughter of Thomas Burns, an engineer, and Mary.
She came to New Zealand with her family in 1864 and they settled in Dunedin.
Mary married Edwin James Wilkinson, an engineer, in 1877 and they had three children.
When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Forth Street.
Edwin died in 1929 and Mary died at her home on 23 September 1938 – they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
