Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Agnes Winter was born about 1849 in England – the daughter of William Winter, a carpenter, and Margaret Sommerville.

She emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1852 with her family on the Persian.

Agnes came to New Zealand and she married Peter Miller, a farmer, on 11 November 1867 in Dunedin.

They lived in Owaka, where Agnes signed the suffrage petition, and they had eight children.

Peter died in 1922 and Agnes died on 8 September 1925 at her daughter’s home at Maclennan, south of Owaka.

They are buried together in the Owaka Cemetery.

Her obituary said she 'was one of the oldest pioneers of the Catlins District'.
