Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Munro was born about 1841 in Forfarshire, Scotland. She married William Alexander, a carpenter, on 26 November 1869 in Glasgow.

Their first child, a daughter, was born in 1870 in Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Shortly after they emigrated to Ontario, Canada where they had a further three children.

About 1878 the family came to New Zealand and settled in Dunedin. Their last two children were born there.

When she signed the suffrage petition Mary was living with her family in Duncan St. Her daughter Margaret Alexander also signed the petition.

They later moved to St Clair where Mary died on 10 November 1903. She is buried in the Northern Cemetery with her six-year-old son George. William died in 1920 in Hawkes Bay.
