Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Alice Hurrell was born in 1864 in Colchester, Essex – the daughter of James Hurrell, a platelayer, and Rhoda King.

Alice emigrated to Otago with her family in 1875 on the Waimea. Alice married Samuel Higginson, a butcher, in 1884. They had no children.

Samuel died in 1892 aged 36. Alice remarried in 1894, at the Dunedin Registry Office, to Harry Albert Robertson, a fruiterer. There were no children from this marriage either.

Alice and Harry lived in Cargill Rd, South Dunedin, for several years before moving to Temuka in South Canterbury.

Alice died on 2 August 1943 in Temuka and Harry died in 1945. They are buried together in the Temuka Cemetery.
