Ann Anderson Hamilton was born about 1848 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of George Hamilton, a clerk, and Jane.

She emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1860s with her two sisters and married Thomas Barnett, a plumber and tinsmith, on 16 September 1868 in Lawrence, Central Otago.

They had nine children and lived in Lawrence until Thomas’ death in 1890, Thomas is buried in the Lawrence Cemetery.

The family moved to Dunedin and when Ann signed the suffrage petition they were living in Stafford St.

Ann died at her home in South Dunedin on 2 August 1898, she is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
