Jane Sandilands was born on 11 December 1844 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Sandilands, a farm servant and Elizabeth Rule.
She emigrated to New Zealand in the early 1860’s and she married James Barr, a carter, on 6 November 1866 in Dunedin.
They had 11 children, three who died in infancy and when Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Elm Row.
James died in 1916 and Jane died at her home on 5 July 1924 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
