Martha Patrick was born on 14 November 1841 in Monimail, Fife, Scotland – the daughter of Thomas Patrick, a brewer’s carter, and Margaret Gilchrist.

She married John Barron on 3 June 1864 in Monimail and they had three children before they emigrated to New Zealand about 1869.

They settled in Dunedin where they had a further nine children, two who died in infancy and John worked as a grocer.

When Martha signed the suffrage petition they were living in Rockyside, Caversham.

John died in 1908 and Martha died on 6 September 1914 – they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
