Jane Malles Smith was born about 1851 – the daughter of George Smith, a carpenter, and Jessie Thompson.

She married John Bewley, a baker, in 1877 and they had five children.

John was declared insolvent in 1879 and when Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Main Rd, South Dunedin.

John died in 1908, he is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.

Jane died in May 1915 in Wellington, her place of burial is unknown.
