Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Euphemia Atkinson Heron Chalmers was born in 1858 in Tokomairiro – the daughter of Robert Chalmers and Euphemia Heron.

She married Francis Black, a farmer, on 17 June 1881 at Milton in South Otago,  they had four children.

When Euphemia signed the suffrage petition the family were living on the Otago Peninslua.

In 1906 they celebrated their Silver Wedding Anniversary at Highcliff with a social evening 'a substantial repast was provided, and during the evening songs were rendered” ”dancing was kept up for some time, and altogether, a very enjoyable time was spent by those present'.

In the 1910s they moved to Henley south of Dunedin where Euphemia died on 5 November 1915.

Francis died in 1918 – they are buried together in the East Taieri Cemetery.
