Ellen/Helen was born about 1828 and she was married to James Borthwick. They had two children in New Zealand in the early 1870s.

James died in Dunedin in 1892 and when Ellen signed the suffrage petition she was living in Albany St, Dunedin with her children.

She died on 29 July 1910 and is buried with James in the Northern Cemetery.
