Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Graham McArthur was born on 9 June 1861 in Glasgow, Scotland – the first child of James McArthur, a labourer, and Mary Simpson.

The family emigrated to New Zealand about 1864 and settled in Dunedin.

Elizabeth married Charles McGrath, an asphalter, at All Saints Church, Dunedin on 15 February 1883 and they had two daughters.

When she signed the suffrage petition Elizabeth was living with her family in Great King St, Dunedin.

Elizabeth died at her home in Howe St, Dunedin on 8 August 1921, she is buried in the McArthur family grave in the Northern Cemetery.

Charles died the following year and he is buried in the McGrath family grave also in the Northern Cemetery.
