Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Rebecca Lewis was born about 1825 in Monks Kirby, Warwickshire.

She married John Carvell, an agricultural labourer in 1848 and they had six children before the family emigrated to Otago in 1875 on the William Davie.

They settled in Dunedin and when Rebecca signed the suffrage petition they were living in Caversham, South Dunedin.

Rebecca died at her home on 17 September 1895 and John died at their daughter’s home in 1907 – they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
