Jane Ross was born on 24 September 1836 in Dornoch, Sutherlandshire, Scotland – the daughter of Alexander Ross, a merchant, and Mary McKay.
Jane’s family emigrated to Australia some time after 1851 and, in February 1856, the came to Otago on the Gil Blas.
The family settled near Milton in Tokomairiro, South Otago and, in 1861, Jane married Alexander Dippie, a carpenter.
They had 8 children and when she signed the suffrage petition Jane’s family were living in George St, Dunedin.
Alexander died in 1905 and Jane died on 5 October 1916. They are buried together in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
