Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ellen Stansfield was born on 31 July 1868 in Lancashire, England – the daughter of James Stansfield, a cloth agent, and Annie Sterrit Barr.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Christian McAusland and they settled in Dunedin.

Ellen married Malcolm Allan, a farmer, in 1892 and they had seven children.

When Ellen signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Ratanui near Owaka.

Malcolm died at their home in 1934 and Ellen died on 22 June 1952 - they are both buried in the Owaka Cemetery.
