Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Elizabeth Winn Maddison was born in 1837 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England – the daughter of Hugh Maddison, a shipwright, and Mary Winn.

She married John Gall, a blockmaker and carpenter – possibly working on board ship, in 1859.

They had three sons, two who died in infancy before they emigrated to New Zealand in the 1870s.

They settled in Dunedin where John died in 1880.

In 1881 a tender for fencing was advertised in the paper that could be seen at Mrs Gall’s store in Cargill Rd, South Dunedin.

Her 'small cash grocery business' was for sale in 1884 and when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition she was living with her son in St Hellier’s Court, Caversham Rise.

She died at her son’s home in Dunedin on 1 October 1913 and is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
