Margaret Rankin Gracie was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia in 1865 – the daughter of John Gracie and Mary Mackie.
She married George Cuthbertson Callander, a carpenter from New Zealand, in Melbourne on 2 September 1886 and they had three children, two who died in infancy.
The family moved to Otago about 1890 and had a further two children.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was living in Dundas St, Dunedin.
When she died at her home in Lambeth Rd on 5 July 1897 her youngest child was just five-months-old.
George died in 1921 - they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
