Janet Hornell was born about 1861 in Wigtownshire, Scotland.
She married James Hornell, a draper’s clerk, about 1880 and they had four children before they emigrated to Otago about 1891.
They settled in Dunedin and when Janet signed the suffrage petition they were living in Rockyside, Caversham.
They had a further four children, two who died in infancy.
Janet died at Aubrey, near Timaru, on 23 March 1921 – she is buried in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
James died in Christchurch in 1937 – he is buried in the Bromley Cemetery, Christchurch.
