Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Janet Currie was born about 1843 in Scotland. She arrived in New Zealand about 1865.

She married Joseph Allwood, a cab driver, in 1881. They had no children.

In 1894, Janet was charged with assault when her husband’s horse was impounded – she was fined five shillings and costs.

In November 1895, Joseph committed suicide by cutting his own throat with a pocket knife. He had financial difficulties and was in poor health.

Janet died in the Benevolent Institute on 7 October 1903. She is buried with Joseph in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
