Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Ann Twatt was born about 1828 in the Shetland Islands, Scotland – the daughter of Peter Twatt, a fisherman and crofter, and Barbara Banks.
She married John Christie, a mariner, on 31 August 1853 in Sandsting and Aithsting, Shetland Islands. They had three children before they emigrated to Otago about 1869.
When she signed the suffrage petition Ann and her family were living in Steep St, off Maitland St in Dunedin.
John died in 1900 and Ann died on 16 October 1910. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
