Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Susannah Wain was born in 1851 in London, England – the daughter of Job Wain, a tailor, and Mary Margaret Scruggs.

She came to New Zealand about 1858 with her family who settled in Dunedin. Her older brother, also called Job, had arrived in Dunedin earlier and he later became the proprietor of Wains Hotel.

On 2 June 1871 Susannah married John Frew, a tinsmith, at Knox Church in Dunedin, they were to have eight children.

The family lived in George St, Dunedin and later owned Clark’s Laundry in North East Valley.

One of their two sons served in WWI and, in 1915, Susannah was mentioned in the newspaper when she donated £5 for the Belgian relief fund & £5 for ambulance work at the front.

Susannah died on 21 December 1920 and John died in 1924. They are buried together in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
