Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Annie Weir Gardiner was born about 1857 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of James Gardiner, a miner, and Margaret Ross. (See 107 M Gardiner)

She came to Otago with her family in 1864 and they spent about three years at the Nokomai diggings before moving to Queenstown in 1869.

Agnes married James Anderson Gardner on 11 March 1885 at her home, Roseneath Cottage, Queenstown.

They had no children and James worked as a fellmonger in Queenstown where Agnes signed the suffrage petition.

James died in 1908 when he suffered internal injuries from being thrown from his horse and Annie died on 19 July 1910 when a varicose vein burst and she died while walking up the street to a friend’s home.

She is buried with James in the Queenstown Cemetery.
