Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Phillis Jones was born 28 January 1841 either in New South Wales or Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Francis Benjamin Jones and Mary Ann.

The family lived in Victoria before moving to Hobart, Tasmania about 1855 where Phillis had a son, Alfred Henry, in 1859.

She sailed for Otago from Melbourne on the Aldinga in 1863 and the following year she married James John Sims.

They had six children and Alfred joined the family also.

When Phillis signed the suffrage petition they were living in North East Valley, Dunedin.

James died at their home in 1910 and Phillis died at their son’s home on 6 June 1916, they are buried together in the Northern Cemetery.
