Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Edith Alicia Symes was born in 1863 in New Zealand – the daughter of Robert Symes and Elizabeth Henderson.

She married Joseph Philip Uren, a miner, on 2 February 1887 at Coal Creek, Central Otago and they had three children.

When Edith signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Blue Spur near Lawrence.

In the 1900s they moved to Waikaia in Southland where Joseph died in 1913.

Edith died on 5 May 1944, they are both buried in the Gore Cemetery.
