Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Caroline Vye was born on 4 June 1854 in Greenwich, London – the daughter of Henry Vye, a stonemason, and Elizabeth Hutchins.

She came to New Zealand with her family and they settled in Lawrence in Central Otago.

Caroline married James Allan Rowe, a journalist and printer, in 1872.

They had eight children and lived in Lawrence until James was declared bankrupt in 1883.

Their home was sold in a mortgagee sale in 1886 and the family then moved to Dunedin.

When Caroline signed the suffrage petition they were living in Brown St and James was working as a machinist at the Otago Daily Times.

He died in 1913 and Caroline died on 30 June 1927, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
