Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jean Cuthbertson was born about 1816 in Renfrewshire, Scotland.
She married James Callander, a hand loom weaver, on 24 February 1833 in Paisley, Renfrewshire.
They had seven children, three who died in infancy, before they boarded the Phillip Laing in 1847 bound for Otago.
When they arrived they lived, for a time, in Dunedin and had three more children.
The family later moved to Scroggs Hill and took up farming.
In July 1882 Jean and James celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary at their home. 'Some fifty or so of their acquaintances and friends were present...a very enjoyable day was spent by those assembled.'
James died in 1888 and when Jean signed the suffrage petition she was still living on the family farm at East Taieri.
She died on 8 August 1900 and is buried with James in the East Taieri Cemetery.
