Elizabeth Mary Brown was born in 1866 in New Zealand – the daughter of Henry Erskine Brown, a farmer, and Margaret Adam.

Elizabeth married John Benjamin Denford, a blacksmith, on 24 May 1887 in South Otago.

They had nine children  when Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition they were living in Sydney Street in Caverham, Dunedin.

John died in 1926 and Elizabeth died at her home on 22 December 1941 – they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
