Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Alison Seggie was born on 3 August 1811 at Inverkeithing, Fifeshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Seggie and Agnes Low.

She married William Langlands on 8 June 1836 in Edinburgh. They had three children in Edinburgh – two dying at an early age – before they emigrated to Otago on the Eden in 1850 with their remaining daughter, Alison. They had another daughter in Dunedin in 1852.

They first lived in McLaggan St, then shifted to nearby Alva St.

William died in 1889 and Alison died on 5 July 1894. Alison’s obituary says “she proved herself a model wife, being always contented, cheery, and devoted to her household duties. She uniformly displayed a most amiable and kindly disposition, and she greatly endeared herself to all who enjoyed the pleasure of her acquaintance.”

She is buried with her husband in the Southern Cemetery.
