Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Elizabeth Williams was born about 1844 in Ireland, the daughter of Enoch Williams. She married Alexander Gold/Gould on 6 November 1862 in Tullaghobegley, Donegal. They arrived in New Zealand about 1863 – the first of their six children was born in 1864.

As early as 1888 the family were living in Albany St, which is where their daughter Mary died aged 21.

In 1892 Alexander was in court charged with drunkenness – he had two previous charges. In November of the next year Alexander commited a violent drunken attack on his wife and children smashing doors and threatening to kill, he was taken into custody.

Mary ran a store at Woodhaugh and she died there on 19 February 1908.

She is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery. Alexander’s date and place of death is unknown. Mary's daughters Ada Gould and Anne Herd also signed the petition.
