Mary Ann Kaye was born on 23 October 1844 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of John Kaye, a grocer and tea merchant, and Ann Young.

She came to Otago with her family in 1858 on the Palmyra and they settled in Dunedin.

Mary married Jame MacFie, a coal merchant, in 1883.

James had been married to Mary’s sister Elizabeth who had died the previous year and left behind five children.

Mary and James had a son in 1884 and when she signed the suffrage petition the family were living in North East Valley, Dunedin.

James died in 1917 and Mary died on 18 October 18th1923, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
