Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Anderson was born about 1849 in Rutherglen, Ayrshire, Scotland. On 3 June 1870 she married Arthur Morrison, a van driver. Their daughter Catherine was born on 6 September 1870 and in 1874 they arrived in Otago on the Invercargill.

Another daughter was born in 1879 at Josephine St, Dalry, Caversham but she died in infancy.

Arthur worked as a coal merchant until he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Caversham in 1893. He held this post until his death from cancer in 1901. His funeral was the “largest turn-out of the public ever seen at a Caversham funeral”.

After Arthur’s death Margaret lived with her daughter Catherine Fleming Bird in Wellington. She died there on 29 July 1936. She is buried in the Southern Cemetery with her husband and son.
