Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Sarah Mary Ann Westfold/Worsfold (known as Mary) was born in 1870 in Dorking, Surrey, England – the daughter of George Westfold, a farm labouerer, and Susan Grout.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1874 on the Asia and they settled on the Otago Peninsula.

Her father died in 1886 when a fall of earth crushed him and the following year Mary married John Osmand, a ploughman.

They had five children, two who died in infancy, and when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were farming at Highcliff on the Peninsula.

John died in 1915 and Mary re-married in 1917 to Wiliam George Carr, a quarryman.

They lived in Andersons Bay, Dunedin where William died in 1937 and Mary died on 13 June 1946.

They are all buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
