Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Prudence Webb was born in 1858 in Swansea, Wales – the daughter of Thomas Webb, a livery coachman, and Catherine Evans.

She married Frederick Bennett in London on 16 September 1884 and soon after they came to New Zealand.

They had five children and when Prudence signed the suffrage petition the family were living in 'Mirzapore Villa', Leith St, Dunedin and Frederick was working as a book keeper.

Frederick worked with his father Charles in a cordial making business.

When Frederick died in 1918 Prudence continued to help with the business. She was charged in 1921, on behalf of Bennett & Sons, with 'selling lemonade containing an addition of saccharine'. This was apparently due to a sugar shortage, the company was found guilty as was Lanes Ltd, another soft drink manufacturer.

Prudence died on 9 November 1923, she is buried in the family grave in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
