Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Hughes was born about 1846 in Galway, Ireland.

She emigrated to Otago and she married Peter Williamson, a farmer, on 14 November 1865 in the Tokomairiro Parish.

They had 10 children, two who died in infancy and a son who died at two years old when he fell into a well.

The family lived in Waihola Gorge before moving to Milburn in the late 1880s where Margaret signed the suffrage petition.

Their land holding was added to over the years and when Peter died in 1918 they owned 5000 acres.

Margaret died at her home on 3 June 1923, she is buried with Peter in the family grave in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.
