Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Alice James/Jane Bishop was born about 1855 in Guernsey, Channel Islands.

She arrived in New Zealand in about 1859 and married Thomas Scott Poole, hairdresser, in 1874. They had six children and at first lived in Milton in South Otago. The family’s house and shop in Milton were destroyed by fire in 1876 and Thomas was declared bankrupt in 1879.

In the 1880s the family moved to Dunedin and Thomas opened a shop in Rattray St.

Thomas died in 1919 and Alice died on 12 September 1939. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
