Ellen (Eleanor) Clarke was born about 1832 in County Tyrone, Ireland, the daughter of William Clarke.

Ellen married John Tweedy on 14 February 1856 in Termonamongan, Castlederg, Ireland. They had at least eight children in Ireland before they emigrated to New Zealand about 1872.

When she signed the suffrage petition Ellen was living in Caversham Rise, Dunedin, with her husband and son.

John died in 1908. Ellen died on 19 December 1911. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
