Ruth Helena Muldrew was born in Tullylish, Ballymacanallen, Ireland in 1859 to parents Ruth and James. She married John Stoneman Adams in 1871. Together they had ten daughters and four sons. Ruth and her family lived at Maerewhenua, the site of a gold digging claim near Ōamaru, on land that her husband farmed and mined. From 1900 her husband was a local Justice of the Peace. Ruth died in 1909, aged 49.
