Sarah Newman was born 26 December 1847 and was baptised 7 January 1848 in St Dunstan and All Saints Stepney London.

She sailed to New Zealand on 8 November 1858 on the Regina from Gravesend to Port Chalmers with her parents Benjamin Newman and Eleanor Née Mitchell and her brothers Benjamin Thomas and Mark George and her sister Esther. The family settled in Dunedin.

She married Charles Henry Attwood 15 September 1863 in St Paul’s Dunedin.

They had 10 children Alice, Sarah, Henry, Esther, Walter, Frederick, Olive, John, Mabel and James.

They lived in Mornington Dunedin. He was a railway worker. Later they lived in Cambridge Waikato where he was a gardener. Charles died there 4 August 1907.

She died 29 August 1922 in Auckland where most of their children also settled.

Her signature on the petition is immediately below that of her sister Esther Nottage of Middlemarch.
